Possibly similar reference points. I had a lot of long phone conversations with Jeff Kyer during the development of Fay Jee, so I can say that the real world touch-points for it were Mount St. Michel (spelling?) just off the coast of norther France, and Rhonda in southern Spain. Then of course Jeff added many other ideas to spice the stew, along with Gloranthaness and gameable bits.

Whether or not you have ever been to Rhonda, the whole physical division of the town reflecting social division, and the cataclysmic source of the physical division suggesting that the social division is also damaging, and pretty natural and wide spread themes I think.
