Two of my assumptions about this:
- Self Rock is not the only way to concentrate on common magic, it is
just a wide-spread way. Some methods probably only teach you to
concentrate on talents, but there may be another method that lets you
concentrate on all common magic. Mechanically that would be the same
as Self Rock, but color wife it would be different.
- Self Rock is essentially a simple mystical path. It lets the
person following it ignore some of the Gloranthan reality of the other
worlds—but only at a fairly minor level, where they still have
something in common in that they are all in the inner world. Reading
the description of Self Rock too, it also sounds mystical to my
untrained ear. Whether this is a remnant of some larger system, an
independent discovery, or the first stage of what can be deeper
explorations I don't have a clue—whatever works well in a game I guess :-)
