A small trading vessel would be the upper end. The greco-roman model
would be a corbita or roundship - single sail and two steering oars.
The norse knorr would also qualify. For a crew that small, you need
to have simple rigging and no rowers. The ships mentinoed usually
have a crew of about a dozen sailors, sometimes less. They are
relatively slow and ungainly craft which carry a few tonnes of
cargo. For tootling around in the river's I'd suggest something like
a Jhoral boat (keel-boat) or barge which are common the world over
where trade moves along navigable rivers.
Of course many fishing boats double as pirate vessels when no one's
looking. They have crews of a half dozen or so and swarm over the
sides of ships anchored at night or caught venturing too close to the
village.
