A question about the size of the Clanking City was recently posed on the Mongoose RQ forum, and, after consulting with Zistor himself, we have a clearer answer to this perplexing question that has stumped the minds of even the most enlightened EWF mystics (such as Obduran the Flyer) and Mostali Calculists (such as Rockwell the Calculator). Old Ways Traditionalists in the camp of King Androfin care little for matters such as scale; merely how tough the shield-wall is likely to prove.

Looking at the map in 'The Clanking City' this is clearly a smallish city that, whilst built on an island, is nevertheless compact. It is surrounded by open land, but a lot of it is sand, making only the area occupied by the city itself stable for building (and its reached its surface limits in that regard). Judging by the detail given, the city is approximately 500 metres at its widest point, and 1,100 metres in length - so say 550,000 sqm. Its obviously heavily urbanised too, above ground, and therefore densely populated for its size. Estimate the population in the region of 5,000 to 8,000 people above ground, depending on influx (and pre-siege).

The city extends underground and is, perhaps, much larger than the surface area. Estimate about 10,000 inhabitants all told beneath ground level. There's obviously migration between the over and under city, but only for those beloved of the Zistorites to be accorded such privilege.

So, around 15,000 - 18,000 souls, beloved of Malkion, the Saints and Zistor.
