Try reading Spring Snow by Yukio Mishima. A number of the chapters finish off with what could easily be haiku (to my uneducated mind) and they really work. Made me at least understand what the point of haiku might be, anyway.
It's a beautiful book too, even if Mishima was a fascist nutcase.
Nothing about trolls in it, of course.
