I rather like the idea of orthodox Mostali being incredibly hard to tell apart, certainly facially (and aside from size and specialisations.. and gender, perhaps) - with simple, distinct regional variation (eg. Gemborg dwarves have heavier brows and sharp eyes, Nidans have longer faces with lighter beards).

Then, with heresy, comes growth (and aging) into more 'individual' forms - not just wear and tear, but also alterations in facial features, gait, etc. This growth would be rather grotesque to the orthodox, and perhaps initially disturbing to the heretic.
