It has become, for me, the identity of the book and imo has just the right amount of depth and complexity that (in me) inspires more story telling. I suspect that the lower 1/4 will be taken up with eye-grabbing text that sells it as a product. I'd also expect to see "created by Robin Laws... " and his accolades.
I think the artist has done a warm and arcane-seeming piece of work that it well suited to purpose - a system that finds home in all settings. I think the person responsible for taking on this artist and working with them to produce something as atmospheric and functional as that deserves congratulation.

I think the cover gives off a heavy TORG vibe. For me, that's not a bad thing!
I think if the book is titled well (HeroQuest still seems to conjure up fantasy motifs - to say nothing of fantasy-with-nifty-plastic-miniatures motifs - for many people) with it's identity as a genreless or "any genre" or "cross genre" type game then the cover really works.
I personally like it a lot and find the image very striking! I start a bit of a conversation about it on a local (to Canberra) forum where people discussed their views of its pros and cons. It did seem that many of the opinions there are inadvertantly echoed here.
