A couple of thoughts:
- Another option when dealing with bad spirits is no doubt to in some ways propitiate them into not hurting you. This might still be a spirit combat, because their nature is to hurt you, but it would be easier than actually defeating them. You aren't driving them away entirely, you are just getting them to not bother a small set of people. (you might even tell them "go get those guys instead..")
- It is probably not usually Malia itself that torments you, just as the thunderstorm over your head is not generally Orlanth. So if you defeat disease spirits that are apt to torment you, that may be all that you really need to do most of the time.
