I think the mistake here is imagining that the Other World cares about physics rather than myth. The station in the myth is that there is a river of swords (which is fatal) and a guardian who throws you in if you can't answer his questions/deal with him/whatever. If the characters can fly, perhaps the "river" will appear as an "endless wall" of swords. The point of the quest is to address the qualities that the guardians/stations address.

Inanna has to disrobe to enter the Underworld; running past the gate keeper is a failure, since,without disrobing Inanna has not undergone the transformation to prepare her for the next station....

Or that's my take on it.
