I was partial to the Hero Wars period, since at the time it was better documented. I'm not really familiar with what Mongoose has put out for the south.
I chose to set my game in Vralos because I wanted a big external enemy, and a "The Hero Wars is between Slavery and Freedom" theme. But if you want to play a more civilized game, Fonrit is full of shifting politics. A Malki game would be different, because I think they're looking more to the seas.
