Honored scholars,

I have just read a very interesting book about reasoned agriculture, in which the authors, both scientists and farmers themselves, plead for a more respectful agriculture than the modern, intensive model. They show how it generates erosion, salinization and actual death (both biological and mineral) of the soil we much need to grow food on. Superb book.

It does say a lot about plants, including the fact that 95% of their nutrients do come from the AIR, and not the ground ! Plants grow mostly processing O2 and CO2 from the air through their leaves (using photosynthesis). They only use trace mineral elements (28 different ones) from the ground and are made of 44% oxygen and 44% carbon. That got me thinking about elves.

If we admit that aldryami and gloranthan plants work like RW ones, then they absolutely need both Air and Sun to grow. That means there was a Sun during the Green Age. But the Green Age was before Yelm. Ergo, what was shining over the immense forests of that Age ?

I'd be curious to read Shannon Applecline's take on that one.
