Our aristocrat must be remarkably pious/magically powerful and very lucky! He stays alive.

He keels over dead, dies in his sleep, dies in mid-sentence, is visited by dark demons that overpowers his guardians and dies, his soul leaves his body before the body realizes he is dead, and so forth. A hundred variations, maybe a thousand.
