It is chaos, young man. It is the enemy of cosmos, and always at war. It wears away at us like rock grinding rock. We worship properly and find our proper place inside Cosmos, but it is easy to make mistakes. We are small creatures, with short time here, so we have little time to learn everything perfectly.

When Grandmother assembles our souls, and the Weaver and Singer put them together, some parts are better or stronger than others. We don't know why this is--maybe she does her best each time but has only faulty parts, as the bucket people say; or maybe she does it to make a test for each of us, like the sweepers say. But no one is perfect--not since the Creation Age was anyone born perfect. We do our best, but our souls are assailed daily, our sacredness is devoured by the chaos insects a drop at a time. If the cosmos is well, then we live long lives and are worn down only slowly by this diminishment of our souls.

Because you are a creature of the Last Devolution, a human being that is the distillation of the material world into a form that mimics the One with a personal Ego. You made yourself a universe in miniature, and since the universe is faulty and always falling into ruin, you too deteriorate your material base. Your soul is corrupt with Life and Time, and so Life and Time devour you and your ego, bringing old age and the despair that all mortal men know when they know the approach of Eternal Nothingness.

Because we are lucky, my sweet. It is one of Her blessings, like death. Like the brilliant and senseless energy of youth, the low and steady fire of age has lessons to teach, and opportunities offered that can not be known by younger people. Just as Death is frightful only to those who live, Old Age is frightful only to the young. Look at our immortals: they are not all young. Many have chosen to be still as elders.

All of the above are 100% true, and provable, by the wisdom keepers of each society.
