Following on from other discussions about Malkioni Castes, and thinking more now of the more "progressive" societies rather than the restrictive Rokari and Brithini...

Presumably each Caste has its own restrictions, taboos and requirements, even in these societies (otherwise, why would castes still exist?). Also I assume one can only belong to one caste at any one time, even if, over the course of your life you might move between them.

For the sake of argument lets assume that a Talar may not engage in manual labour, and a Dromal may not own land. A farmer who ploughs the fields and gathers the harvest is a Dromal, because he is labouring in the fields A farmer who owns the fields and employs others to work the land is a Talar. If a wealthy Dromal can gain promotion to the Talar Caste (and granted it might take more than just wealth) can their be a point at which he can own the land, bus still need to do some of the work himself?

If a sailor is a member of the Dromal caste, a marine is a Horali and the helmsman a Talar, who can fight off the Ygg Island Pirates when they are boarded? Who can work their passage home aboard a merchant ship?
