Just a thought,

Perhaps caste enters into the equation of spellcasting even though sorcery is just impersonal manipulation of the runes, because caste is implicit in the western understanding of the Man rune.

If this is so, then if you try to boost someones swordsmanship, then you'd need Death or something and Man. It would not matter that the runes are impersonal forces if you would only have the "math" to combine Death with the Horali subset of the Man rune.
