The object could give power over the inmaterial (ghosts and all kind
of spirits) at the expense of extreme weakness from physical damage.
As a side effect of the power the Prince's body would reappear on the
physical plane, of course, so that they'd have to lock his body on a
tower or something like that. On top of that he wouldn't be able to
move his body at all, he's still dead, but he could be attacked
through his body.
You could make his body decay too, which would make for a nice
followup campaign some hundred years afterwards, in order to find a
new body for the city guardian :P.
