Certainly a founder of a community has closer ties to it than some deity found
along the road and convinced to act as the wyter, but what happens to the
displaced deity?
/// Depends on whether it is peacefully or forcefully switched. In Fay Jee, the
guardian demon remained the community's slave for eight centuries, until the PCs
came along with a solution to replace it with something somewhat less
"godlearnerish" : the manes of Prince Yorge, slain by assassination whose
essence they managed to "store" in his own wedding ring. They negotiated with
the demon along the line "your freedom vs. your secrets, etc.)
Does it get some sort of pension worship as one among many protective deities of
the place/community?
/// Not in that case, as the demon has agendas to follow elswhere. But I can
imagine propitiary rites in the city's rituals, so it never comes back.
Does the transition affect the community's magic, internal peace, etc.?
/// Definitely in the above case : the order of sorcerers in charge of
controlling the demon becomes unemployed and argues about the whole ideas. They
are feared and powerful. The underworld has specific powers over the many ghosts
on which bones the city was built aeons ago ; Prince Yorge's manes do not have
this power, and ghosts will proliferate at night as long as another solution
isn't found. And so on.
If so, is there an initial deterioration of the community's magic?
/// I think so. The new Guardian might not be supported by the whole population
before a long time, as old-timers keep their loyalty to the good old days. Even
if the whole population "converts", it takes some time (a few seasons at least)
for the new Guardian to reach full power. And its ablities will probably differ
from the old one, necessitating more adjustements.
