I always figured it was weird, dangerous Green Age magic.
Pavis' cult is, in my game, one of the rare few that has rituals and knowledge necessary to enter the Green Age, get something positive done, and leave without ending the Age.
In fact, this has recently happened in my game, where the PC Hero mostly undifferentiated man and Champion of Pavis successfully married and mated with the first of seven elf brides.
