Sergi is right. Though I would see other factors at work too:	* The ability of the Durulz to survive in close proximity to the Upland Marsh
	* The corner of Sartar settled by the Durulz is not that attractive to the other tribes (and not just because of the Upland Marsh)
	* Some sort of arrangement with their neighbours the Lismelder offers a further degree of protection
	* Durulz don't have many cattle to raid
	* The role of the Durulz in riverine trade has some value, and as the Lunars leanred the hard way, it isn't that easy for others to uscle in on this
	* Durulz stay together as a tribe because they can't really intermarry with other tribes, and clans can't defect to another tribe because they have fallen out with the clan chief (also no-one else would want them)
	* Sartar made them a tribe and however much one Orlanthi tribe might dislike another, they tend not to do "ethnic cleansing"
	* Tribe-on-tribe conflict would also be an issue for the Prince or King of Sartar
	* With this in mind the Durulz tribe is noted for its loyalty to the Royal House of Sartar
The Durulz may have survived but that doesn't mean they thrive, or that they are popular -- this is why they were a safe choice as scapegoats in the aftermath of Starbrow's Rebellion (even though the Durulz probably hadn't done enough during the rebellion to earn this dubious honour)
Think also of the episode of Star Trek (was it Deep Space Nine?) where a Klingon was going to fight a duel against a Ferengi. I don't remember all the details, but ultimately it was the Klingon who was in the no-win situation.

"their innate cowardice", of course.
