Lich is an old English word meaning "corpse," "body," or "cadaver". It is also used tas a word to describe Unlife and is synonomous with "wight".

So frex, the Carmanian ruler might well have maintained his existence as "lich" - which could mean he was Vivamort cultist or other Unliving demon like Brangbane the Ghoul King, the Corpse-King of the Marsh and so on.

Lichgate is traditionally the gate into a churchyard but could also be the gate to a cemetary. Or just the gate by which the dead enter or exit a city.
