> What's a Star Captain? A god who came down from the stars to fight off the Darkness to save your people. Or maybe a hero who went to the stars and came back with magical Fire power from the Sky. Or maybe it is a star that stayed in heaven but also shined the way for your people. It is whatever you want it to be, need it to be, or think it would cool to be.
I used to assume that Star Captains would be Sky People, e.g. Certamus types, that (like their leader, Pole Star) came down during the Greater Darkness to do the honourable thing, even if their protegees were Orlanthi.
I used to regard Pole Star as the Star General, and the Star Captains as his followers.
Then Rigsdal was introduced - still a Fire Tribe god who joined Orlanth's side, but quite apart from what an independent visitor to the Sky World (like a Malkioni quester) would expect from meeting Pole Star.
And in Heortling mythology we learned that Liorn and Forosil, founders of two Vingkotling tribes, were Vingkotling heroes who had apotheosized to gain a permanent seat among the Thunder Brothers, were counted among the Star Captains. (Does this conform to the old "a Hero is someone who has a star of his own" concept?)
It seems that the new understanding of Orlanth also makes him a planetary deity. However, if the Red Goddess does challenge his reign over the Middle Air (Lower Sky), I wonder why there is so little evidence in the sky, with Orlanth's Ring still spiralling upwards without any disturbance.
I would have expected some flashy light shows, e.g. during the Battle of Castle Blue, but also during the siege of Whitewall.
