And because, in a shattered and thinly populated land, you struggle to get much benefit from specializing your worship. There are not the great temples (or equivalent) that help support higher levels of devotion and guard more obscure stories/rites/grimoires that enable the specialist to learn deeper magic.

So when there is little benefit from specializing, there is little cost--in terms of time and power--to picking up a bit of whatever seems useful.

So when these wealthy and somewhat powerful strangers worship something, why not worship it too? Maybe you can gain their power?
