This sits well alongside the suggestion made in one fanzine or website (can't remember where) which suggested that Elves travelling amongst humans might choose to stay at an inn and ask to stay in the stables, for a free breakfast and evening meal in addition to cheap lodgings.
 

The fanzine went on to grade the mannure of different animals as well -- IIRC chicken manure was considered to be a guilty 'junk food' pleasure, whereas horses' was more wholesome.

How about manure?  (and any other type of soil enrichener)

For that matter, maybe half the point is to get the beasts of burden to come to the trade site and leave manure behind, the actual trade goods are beside the point.  This is why the elves often won't take the first, second, or even fifth offer--they want you to keep coming back with your oxen or horses ;-)
