To me the proto-Vadeli were the arch-typical mad scientists. Their's was the explorer tribe. They went out into the world exploring creation and reporting their discoveries back to the Zabburi for the good of Gods People. But they went too far - into other worlds where the Creator's Law was not respected. At first they brought back interesting items and information - presumably negative examples showing how screwed up the rest of the universe was. Eventually they became polluted by this - illuminated, some might say - and fell to the error of hubris. Tempted by the amazing discovery that there were entities that did not follow the Law of God, they shifted from serving God's People to serving only their own greed and ambition. The more they were opposed by the orthodox Malkioni the deeper into error they fell in response. In the end they wound up almost conquering their world - as people unrestrained by morality often do - but they lost it all in the end because they took it all too far - as people unrestrained by morality often do. This is an oft repeated theme in Gloranthan history. Maybe the Vadeli are the archetype for this, the mold from which Nysalor and the Red Goddess were cast.

Do they break the Law out of spite? Yes. Even to the point that Hrestol's reverse psychological ploy - which they surely saw through - would bind them.
Would they use Chaos? Absolutely. Not because they are Chaotic, but because they have no restraining moral code. Are they inherently Chaotic? No. They are something worse.
