Sometimes (well Baen do anyhow) selling the early right to read a draft and getting fans to actually pay for the privilege of being a proof reader. Good trick if you can make it work (and if no bugger uploads the whole thing in teh torrentz). I think with Baen at least buying an ARC then gets you an eventual proofread e-copy as well.
