Of course it could be that I'm a complete idiot and have no idea how to manage forums as Loz describes. I am reasonably interested in third age Dragon Pass, barely interested at all in whatever Jeff thinks the West is like these days, a bit interested in Pavis, but not very, would like to read more about Kraloela.

If there's a way of getting a forum to filter out threads on such a basis then I might be a bit more sympathetic to them. Am I doing something wrong in just looking at a list of threads as they appear by default and not getting any benefits like that?

I can subscribe to hot topics and easily ignore the ones I've no interest in. Navigating forums is something I find easier to do and my email box remains unclogged. It's better for me because it's less intrusive on my time and message space. It's easier to read. It's easier to manage.
