I don't know if that's the official view but, in my Glorantha, the adulthood initiation and the cult initiation are two different events. I've even played them as such in a campaign.

Adulthood initiation means initiating into de pantheon, thus becoming a lay member. It's a group event for boys (done every 2-3 years for all boys of age) and something more personal for girls (some time after her first menstruation). Some time after that, a year or so, you become an initiate to the god that has called you, usually Orlanth or Ernalda.

It makes more sense to me this way, first you become a member of the community and this way a future Barntar initiate has his passage to adulthood the same way than a normal orlanthi.
