You've probably already thought of this, but you might look in the Glorious Reascent and the Fortunate Succession for Dara Happan tales that you can flip around.
I played a Pentan once, but was very dissatisfied with it. I simply didn't know enough about the culture to come up with a good backstory. Basically, he just became the dude with a horse and flaming arrows. He drowned.
