In my Wastelands game they are Unicorns that became extinct.
When the Amazon Warrior women of Yelorna visited the Wastelands in the First Age age, she was already known to the Sky Gazers spirit society as Ourania. An offshoot society quickly formed, over time they made their own tiny tribe, attracting dissatisfied Praxian woman and moving away from traditional Waha dominated paths. Her followers quickly discovered her Unicorn Path, and soon the society was bringing back unicorns to the Wastelands, unseen since the Golden Age of Genert.
The tribe is really a small clan and there are few unicorns. YGMV.
