Although a good real world method, I'd go with a story.

In my Wastelands, Waha has met Foundchild and thus Helpwoman and her three famous meals. She already knows the secret of taming fire to cook. Waha remembers this, goes to her and learns to be a firekeeper. He makes his own magic fire horn from something really cool - like an old broken tip of Storm Bull's horn (the tips grow back of course). He goes to Oakfed and bets him that he can't set fire to the equally cool horn contents. Oakfed jumps... and is trapped. He then gets him to promise to be good, to help the survivors.

A simplistic myth, but should get the idea across.
