Certainly not exactly the norm in the sticks, but anywhere in a kingdom minting its own coins most people should be happy to accept these or some obviously interchangeable facimile, unless the proferrer looks like a highly suspicious type, or the proferree is being exceedingly stroppy. Exceptionally zealous kingdoms might even have "legal tender" style laws to ensure this.

On the other hand, someone selling goods (or whatever) in the boondocks might find it hard to get _paid_ in coin, as few people will have bedsteads stuffed full of them. Unless another PC party has just been in town, of course. ;-) Lots of scope for having the hapless adventurers trail half a herd of cattle behind them, or gamely clutching a hastily scrawled IOU...
