Stephen Tempest gives us good summaries:

I think there's a play here on the word "heart". Harrek ripped her heart out, but Annstad won it. Surely that's intended?

Besides, a superheroine like Jar-eel would find some way to survive with a big hole in her where her heart used to be. She'd catch a meteor from the moon or something.
