  1. Who is this Elmal Guy?
Elmal was introduced in King of Sartar, in a bit called "Making
Gods." It explains how the cult of Yelmalio arose during recent
historical times in Sartar, out of the native Elmal cult. Elmal
was, according to KoS, the good sun of the Orlanthi, as opposed
to the evil emperor, Yelm. This casts considerable doubt on
Yelmalio's history, as presented in Sun County and elsewhere.

Response to the Elmal development in the RQ community was
generally negative. As a result, Greg Stafford wrote an essay
called "The Birth of Elmal, or Why I Screwed Up Your Glorantha"
in the RuneQuest-Con I program book. This essay has lots of
interesting information, including Greg's confession to being an
          Arkati.

Lots of commentary on the whole darn Elmal business has appeared
in the RQ Daily and the Gloranthan Digest. Printed commentaries
have included "The Cold Sun: Reconciling Sun County and King of
Sartar," by Stephen Martin and "The Yelmalio/Elmal Schism" by
David Hall (all in the RQ Con I program book), and "Lies with
Truth," by Martin Crim, in Codex vol. 1, #3.

Here's how various people handle Elmal/Yelmalio:
            a. The Elmal cult died out long ago (First Age or sooner): this
is how Sandy Petersen runs it.
            b. The Elmal cult still exists, but Yelmalio really has been
around for a long time, either as the elves' god of the sun
or as a Pelorian (but not Dara Happan) cult.
            c. Yelmalio is a new creation/revelation, with a history that
is (depending on how you look at it) fraudulent, creative
reinterpretation, or revelation of How It Really Was.

If you run Elmal as a currently-existing cult, his cult is
generally like Yelmalio's, with the following changes (credit
David Dunham and Maurice Beyke; editing blame to the FAQ author):

          Runes: Fire and Truth
God of the Sun & Horses, Orlanth's Housecarl
          Worshippers: Warriors, guards, housecarls, horsemasters.

Skills: Animal Lore, Scan, Bow or Javelin, Riding, Spear Attack.
Duties: Warfare, guarding steads, raising horses.
Cult Magic: Coordination, Detect Enemies, Farsee, Firearrow,
Fireblade, Ignite, Light, Lightwall, Protection, Repair.

          Geas Changes:
34-36 Always stand a double watch (to commemorate Elmal being
                    left to guard Orlanth's home).
78-79 Never speak to or help Chaos in any way.
80-81 Never flee or surrender to any Chaos creatures.
82-84 Never refuse a request for aid from Storm or Earth
                    cultists.
85-86 Never allow a cat to suffer needlessly.

Suncarls (Rune Lords): as Light Sons, but with reusable rune
magic. (Elmal has no equivalents of Light Servants or Light
Priests; they came into Yelmalio from Pelorian influence.)

Divine Magic: all common, Catseye, Command Salamander, Enchant
Iron, Shield, Sunbright, Summon Salamander, and Truespear.

Associated Cults: Hippoi (Bless Horses), Orlanth (Lightning),
Chalana Arroy (Heal Body), Ernalda (Bless Crops).
