Hmm... I dislike having one Simple Contest decide another (if it takes two contests, it's not Simple, is it?), but it could work - Ambush vs. Sense Ambush, then either Archery vs. Dodge Missile or Archery vs. some default (Tough, for instance) or, if nothing else suited, 6. Actually, if the thugs succeed it might be Archery vs. Get That Bastard With The Bow (a little-known skill favoured by many street thugs...).

Plot must sometimes take a back seat to consequences. If the players go off on a angent, you have to adjust... In this case, is the trader guilty of Secret Murder (which might bring down Divine rumblings)? Probably not, they are Lunars... Is he guilty of murder? Not by Heortling law, but the Lunars will be unimpressed... If he MISSES, what happens? An eye for an eye, probably... Therefore, I'd say this was pretty important.

I should think the idea of murdering someone was pretty universal, unless they're used to a lawless D&D style... If people get bumped off without consequence further than personal vendetta all the time, go with the Simple Contest. Seem to me to set a precedent though, you could end up with a campaign of sneaky assasins...
