I hadn't thought about the Improv penalty, but yes, I'd say that was relevant. Rules-abuse? If you have Combat: Spear and Shield and lose the shield, you have an Improv penalty. That's the rule, not the abuse. And I would probably be applying an Improv penalty to the shield breaker attack (unless it was a Break Shield Feat or similar specifically designed for the purpose), so it's not a 'normal' wound.

Well, quite a few of them are re-enactment or Live Roleplaying comatants, and have seen just how easy it is to get screwed up on a battlefield.
