I don't see this as likely the intent of the rule, FWIW (Rory, any insight there?). I mean, sure, use improv penalties where appropriate. But "relevant" refers to the contest, not the ability in question. Relevant sounds to me like the same sort of considerations as Improv Penalties.

If you were actually refering to the last clause about AP, I'm not sure what you're getting at at all. It's just saying that if you pump with a fetish before a contest that you do get a bonus to the roll, but not a bonus to AP (which you do get with augments, etc). Basically, you can have one or the other, not both.

Yeah, this is the worst part. I don't see it as any harder at all. The player will simply develop abilities that match those of the available spirits. At chargen this is all too easy. It would just make things odd.

I agree that animists are overly attractive, but I think other proposed changes make more sense than this. One was to limit the outcome as per heroforming. Essentially (OK, spiritually), the character becomes one with the spirit, just like the spirit of an ancestor. Simply melds these two rules. It's an interesting option.
