I think they go off in a big thunderclap - a painful one. Unfortunately, poor Thorngast was written long before Thunder Rebels was - the bonuses are just there to give a narrator new to Glorantha something unusual to throw at the players. Thorngast's a sour old cripple but he's surprisingly well armed.

I assumed that the stones were similar to the ones built in RQ (one use) and they were built as a ritual. The flat augment they provided was based on the creator's ability to enchant them (and all the bonuses he could bring to bear). Other than the bit about edges, they still work pretty well - though the resistance of 14 is, of course, if the target doesn't have any magical defence.

Hmmm.
