I would like to give another view on this - to become a Hero the hero has to do something more or different than his god. Merely emulating the god just makes you a part of that god (IMO). To become a god yourself, like Argrath, like the Red Goddess perhaps, or like Lokamayadon tried to be, you need to do something that is more than just be a disciple.

In short - a disciple becomes a god by becoming subsumed into a god, a Hero makes himself a god in his own right, or as a Hero, which is better than being a god because you still have free will.
