The example only had 13... But at +3 each, that's almost two full mastery levels. So "Clan Champion 10W" turns into "Clan Champion 9W2" (without support or equipment).

Oh, he's got to take time to "power up", of course, but a Clan Champion acting as "the Clan Champion" (as opposed to just "in a brawl") will have various rituals, etc. to get up to fighting speed. Two of these guys going head to head is a sight that "normal" people (you know, Starting Characters, Farmers, Herders etc) don't soon forget.

Of course, a Master Plower or a Healer should be just as impressive, even if the normal list of abilities don't seem to support it.

As a Narrator working with NPCs, You might think in terms of:

Surprised: only his "Ready magic" is available as the contest starts. See it coming: 2-3 augments up before the contest starts Prepared: 3-5 augments up (this is the HQ "3 magics" plus a couple Automatics like "Large" and "Strong").
Got all the time in the world to do the rituals: 5-20 augments, plus additonal augments and support from the community.

With this sort of scheme, you could play the NPC with just one ability rating ("Clan Champion") and figure that his augmenting abilities will average out to the Auto Augment of that one rating (Sure, he may have "Brave" at 10 points higher, but his magic is all 5 points lower...).

Normal, non-magical equipment for a fighter is about +7 (Hand weapon, Shield, Chainmail). Of course, the equipment bonus can be *much* higher, but... (That's probably good for any well-equipped character, so I'd use it as a rule of thumb for the Plowman and Healer as well).

So the Clan Champion 10w would turn into: Surprised: 20w
See it coming: 3w2-6w2
Prepared: 6w2-12w2
Ritual combat: 12w2-17W4 (plus support).

This way you don't have to figure all the augments the guy might be able to use, and every exact bonus they give, you just play it by ear.
