Actually, that bit on page 68 is a Suggestion, not Rule ("You *may wish* to assign..."). Also, the followers aren't killed, just "out of the contest" until the hero recovers enough AP, then they are back in. It's a bit more work, but some think it a bit more realistic.

If you want a thumb-rule for taking out Augmentors, You could "attack" the Augmenting followers with the "Trading AP for Penalties" rule (page 189): if you take out the follower's +2 augment (normal retainer, or not-buffed sidekick), then they are out of the fight. I'd probably allow the trade of 14 AP in one shot to do the trick, rather than restricting it to 7 AP per round.
