Crunchy bits refers to getting bonuses from having better weapons and armour. Forget pc's, but 2 average warriors facing each other, one with a club and another a fully kitted out hoplite, the kit for the cudgel guy is, say, +2 and the kit for the hoplite guy is about +11. Now if they both start with 17 in fighting then the armoured guy has a +9 adventure. Now a mighty hero improvising with said cudgel off of his sword skill would probably take out 6nr hoplites with aplomb.
