We all do that all the time. And how players and gm's ineterperet the contest results is one of the points of the HQ system.
What I would be wary of is using the contest results to interperet things about the characters that I prefer to be the basis of choices for the player character. Luke going over to the dark side in Star Wars should not be because of the result of a dice roll unless Luke is the NPC, for example. Estave choosing to sacrafice herself through her blind love for her treacherous husband is another. :^)
