I would have thought that the man rune should give access to the "super human" abilities, such as strength and toughness and faster reactions etc.
Similarly for Elves and the plant rune and dragonewts and their rune :-))

I agree. While I don't think that the Man rune is completely useless, I would say that its probably the least useful of all the core runes, and for exactly the reason you give.
