Thank you very much! That's basically what I was gathering from the rules, but since there isn't anything explicit about using hero points for supporting characters, I wasn't sure if that was some kind of errata. I tend to prefer games from smaller companies, but sometimes it's really clear they didn't have enough people look over the game who didn't have a hand in designing it. :)
