I agree with Mikko here. A defensive edge does not help you win, it helps you survive. Fyrd member with ^20 armour against clan champion is likely to lose, but it will take some big bids and time for that to happen. Fyrd member with a +10, stands more of a chance of winning. The difference in feel is quite substantial.

My system is to ignore edges until after the contest, then work out what the result would have been with edges treated as bonuses. An example :

Fyrdman (Spear&Shield 18^20(defensive))
Clan Champion (Sword&Shield 10W)

Fyrdman rolls a 14, the Champion a 3. That's a minor victory to the Champion. The Fyrdman has lost, and suffers as such. However, now we take edges into consideration. With a +20 (for his defensive edge) the Fyrdman would have cancelled the Champion's mastery, leaving both with successes. The Fyrdman is only dazed, the magical armour saving him from injury...

This use of edges seems to me a little more in keeping with the extended contest version - they provide extra/reduced damage, but don't decide who won.

Couple of comments :
Edges can't reduce injury (or equivalent in non-combat) below dazed - you did lose.
I wouldn't bother with this at all unless the edges are substantial.

Cheers,
Graham
