I am currently reading Adrian Goldsworthy's "Roman Warfare" book and the quality of Roman military healthcare is commented upon there as well. I cannot remember the exact wording, but I seem to remember that he mentions the quality of the Roman physicians, the low rate of deaths and the fact that the hospital was one of the first built and most important buildings in a permanent fort.
