I think these numbers are better. We were handing out 1 at the start of a session, 1-5 at the end of a session (usually 3 or 4) and (1-5) at the end of a multi-session episode. For my taste, as narrator, rate of advancement was not the biggest problem with this but the growth of some very large HP pools for use in bumping. As our sessions are only 3 hours and we probably only have an extended contest once every 2 sessions the rate of acquisition far exceeded the rate of spend. As a result I had to use opponents with a +1W advantage to give the heroes a real sense of challenge.

I prefer the 1-3 HP at the beginning of a session, but them I'm a mean and stingy narrator. However, when we discussed the issue in group the most important point raised was that it all depends on where you as a group want to be in terms of power level. I think Graham is right in that this is not so much a rules issue as an issue of personal preference for different types of story.
