No wonder. Maize is an absolute bitch to grow, apparently. Corn is a little less so, but the amount of science and genetic engineering that's gone into building corn production techniques and materials to the point we have is remarkable and testament to how damn hard it is to grow an "artificial" crop like corn.

By comparison, look at the technology involved in growing "natural" crops like potatoes, beets, rye.

Anyone would think even we were completely nuts to depend as much as we do on corn production, let alone the Lunars. 8)

Still, I never thought of the Lunar/Aztec parallel until now, but that gives food for thought -- perhaps I should dig out my copy of "The Forest Kings" and reread it... hmmm...
