I'd agree with you about cotton and linen, but I've worn gortex in snow, rain etc, with nice modern boots. I've also worn a woolen tunic or two and a heavy wool cloak, along with leather boots with sheepskin liners, under similar conditions. I was a lot warmer (though wetter) in the Dark Age kit. It's heavy, that's the main disadvantage. (And the boots had smooth soles, but that's a separate problem.)
