GenCon Socal is a new event for GenCon, a late-year convention next to Disneyland. The venue was nearly empty - mostly because there was too much space and not enough people (The GenCon management was happy with its attendance figures, and it will be done again next year, according to the rumors).

The Dealer's room was pretty quiet - plenty of time and space for demos, or just chatting with friends. The autograph signing area was pretty quiet - Val Kilmer basically blew it off, Bill Shatner stayed and chatted, and cast members of Babylon 5 and (the original) Battle Star Galactica were there. Not being an autograph hound (and not wanting to pay $15 or more for a picture of Starbuck with a signature) I didn't spend muh time there except when I was "security".

I volunteered to run two games and a seminar. The Friday game didn't happen - no one signed up to play. So I went hit the volunteer desk for some hours. The Seminar - "Heroquest in 10 minutes" had four people attend, none of whom were overly familiar with the rules (One was an old-time RQ fan who was wondering about "what had happened to Glorantha", the rest had read the rules but never run or played them. So we had a nice chat ranging from the ruls to the world to "why Roderick likes HQ better than RQ".

The game on Staurday had three attendees, none of whome were die-hard Glorantha fans (though they had all played in Glorantha at omne time or another, unlike my Uber-Glorantha-geek players at ConQuest a few months ago). it was another foray into Darkest Engiziland. We diwcovered that Dwarf Run was wiped out by the dragons, the Upland Marsh was in a different place, Dragonnewt cities are Squamous and Rugous and Non-Euclidian. They founded a new Alakoring city in the Glass City of Intan (You knowm it as the Falling Ruins, except everything had been turned to glass - heavy lead crystal type glass). The climax of the game took place in the deserted city surroundeing Emperor Khordavu's mines. This time there were no degenerat inhabitants to fight, instead the Interpreter (exiled prince of the Balmyr tribe) and the Merchant (Dara Happan Sun Worshipper) slipped into the Hero Plane and were infused with the powers of their deities, fighting it out over the city. Lots of creative ability use (as I explained: "If you can justify it to me, you can use it"), leading to the final Desparation Stake on the part of Storm - reduced to 1 AP, he bids all, leaping on the back of the solar to "ride" him, and rolls a critical - Solar rolls a failure! Teh Solar is reduced to -25 or so. Unfortunately for all those folk back home, he had used "Relationship: League" as his defense ability. Now everything they do is doomed to failure!

However, Storm was merciful and rehabilitated the merchant (ie, healed his wounds, and kept him as a thrall). The third player, the Rinliddi Big Game Hunter, decided that he wanted no part of the battle, and left before it really began. He eventually made his way back to the Empire, with a story to tell, of wonders and terrors in the south. the balmyr tribe moved north (before anyone else), settling in the Imperial city high in the Quivin mountains.

All in all, a fun time. Now I have to figure out how to claim MiB points...
